Music at Merchants – week 20th July

July 20, 2015

Five jocks, locked and ready to rock (gently) this week at Merchants Tavern

Toby Tobias – known for his work with the Underground Disco compilations and the flawless Rekids label, he slows down the tempo a touch for a Wednesday night session

Darren Morgan (Love Machine) makes his Music at Merchants debut on Thursday night. Very much on the same page as the Spiritland sound, Darren has built a supremely tasty hi-fidelty soundsystem that you can hear in action this summer at the Love Machine party.

Paul Hillery is another kindred soul whose musical tastes stretch from funk, rock and jazz to AOR smoothness. Check out his ‘Folk Funk to Trippy Troubadors’ series on Mixcloud for a taste of what you’ll hear on his vinyl-only debut on Friday night

Chris Coco (Melodica) is now a fully signed-up Music at Merchants regular. If you haven’t heard his recent compilation on Balearic Records, it’s what your summer has been missing. He’ll be at the controls on Saturday night

Come and see out the weekend in the company of the Dapper Don, Oxford’s Count Skylarkin’. He’ll be in session on Sunday afternoon, playing all things reggae, ska, afro and dub-tinged from 4 – 8pm.

Music at Merchants – week starting 13th July

July 13, 2015

We say farewell to Carl Wilson, Bobby Womack, Adeva, Jean-Luc Ponty and the many other lovely faces that have sat in our windows for the last few months with a new bunch of LPs going up. Another week of fine dining, drinking and musical enlightenment awaits at Merchants Tavern with no less than five DJs playing across the board.

On Wednesday evening, Rob Hyde plays gentle prog, poppy Krautrock and seasonal folk from his deep and eclectic record collection

Thursday night the legendary Mixmaster Morris (Ninja Tune/Nubient) returns to the Merchants Tavern sound system. Come and hear the master at the controls with his unique blend of upfront electronic funk, futurist R’n’B and jazz from outer space

A rare London visit from Berlin-based Daniel Berman (Bergerac/Smugglers Inn Radio) beckons on Friday night from 6.30pm. Releasing music under many names including Hot Coins and Red Rack’em monikers, he’ll be playing a slower and more soulful sound than you’d usually hear him play in the warehouses of Kreuzberg

Spiritland resident Dan Bean (bleep43) is back in action on Saturday night, with a record bag packed with boogie, disco, dub and house that’s funky (not to be confused with funky house)

Rob Butler (Be With Records) is in session for Sunday afternoon. With a blistering release schedule including re-releases from Cassie, Letta Mbulu, Hatchback and Nohelani Cypriano you can expect a leisurely afternoon of music
