Music at Merchants – week 31st August

August 31, 2015

It’s all hands to the controls with a bumper week as we bring you five nights of music with a one-off Tuesday night DJ set from Elijah Wood and Zach Cowie, aka Wooden Wisdom

We say a fond farewell to the big Tannoy Westminsters this week, leaving us for a new home after a solid eleven months of service (now we’ve broken them in nicely, they’re off to be reviewed by HiFi World.) In their place goes something equally exquisite – a pair of the Living Voice Air Scouts. Built by the legendary Kevin Scott in 1995, these are the precursor to his magnum opus, the Vox Olympians. Airy, crisp and augmented by a pair of JBL subwoofers to tickle the low end, the Air Scouts have a distinctly musical and authoritative tone to them. Don’t bother scouring eBay for them – under 25 pairs were created and they’ve mainly gone to the audiophiles in Asia, never to be seen again.

We’ve also swapped out our mixer for the beautiful Alpha Recording Systems ARS 4100, hand built in Japan. The system is sounding supremely sweet, so come down and treat your ears. Here’s what’s on this week

We have a very rare Tuesday night session this week with Elijah Wood and Zach Cowie, playing together as Wooden Wisdom. If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know these two DJs and diggers have come together over a shared love of cosmic, kraut, jazz, psych, folk and more, as well as a passion for the serious end of hi-fi equipment. They’re ably supported by DJ Fitz on the night. This is a rare appearance, so pop along or regret it forever. The music starts at 6pm until close

On Wednesday night, we welcome back Chris Coco (Melodica) from his Balearic summer wanderings. He’ll be keeping things both easy and breezy in his effortless style. His Mixcloud radio show continues to be consistently great

Having finally dried out from Carnival, David Sacks and Francis Redman (The Running) make a long-overdue return to Merchants Tavern on Thursday night with their mix of killer jazz, tribal rhythms and vinyl heat

It’s a Music at Merchants debut on Friday night as we say ‘shw mae’ to Leon G.Z. Eberg (Candela) – it was Mr Scruff who first tipped us off to the Cardiff-based beats supremo, DJ and driving force behind the outstanding Candela events, and we are delighted to welcome him to play on the new sound system

To top off the week, Saturday night sees the authoritative hand of Kirk Degiogrio (Machine) at the controls, taking a break from pulverising the more discerning dance floors of Europe to play a set of impeccably chosen jazz, soul and rare groove

Music at Merchants – week 24th August

August 24, 2015

electronic-music-studios-london

After a thoroughly life-affirming weekend in Wales, where plenty of the Music at Merchants regulars were to be found frolicking on and off the stages of the Green Man Festival (namely Pete Fowler, thesvelteone, Rob Smoughton, Dan Bean and more), we have returned to the serious business of supplying the soundtrack to your supping at Merchants Tavern. And so:

Toby Tobias (Undeground Disco/Rekids) is back for another session on Wednesday night. Expect sweet funk, low-slung disco and rare soul from this insatiable digger

On Thursday night we say ‘howdy’ to old pardner Baylen Leonard (Amazing Radio) playing all manner of country rock, bluegrass, folk, rhythm and roots, and more. Pig wrestling and checked shirts are both optional but strongly advised

On Friday night we turn things over to Jack Sellen (Salad Sound System) and Aaron Fletcher (The Bees) – Jack’s record collection has tickled ears in Merchants Tavern many times before, and The Bees’ blend of soulful rock and roots is perfect musical setting to your Friday night

On Saturday night we welcome back our musical maestro from Mancunia, Pasta Paul (Kosmonaut) – we’ll be carb-loading on a spicy mix of funky rock, balearic business and pop curveballs

The fun starts at 6.30pm every night, and sounds come from Spiritland

Music at Merchants – week 17th August

August 17, 2015

London in August continues to be a delight – no traffic, tables available in restaurants and plenty of balmy evenings, perfect for kicking back with a strong drink and some sweet music. Here’s how this week is shaping up musically at Merchants Tavern:

Rob Butler is behind the turntables on Wednesday night. The Be With Records main man will be warming up for his imminent gig in Hawaii in September to celebrate the first ever vinyl release of the much sought-after Nohelani Cypriano album with a blend of soul, funk and AOR smoothness

Josef Huber makes his Music at Merchants debut this Thursday night. He came across our radar as the man behind the fantastic Works of Design – dealers of exquisite vintage audio equipment. It comes as no surprise to learn that he’s also a music connoisseur of the first order. Expect a rarified mix of music on vinyl

Friday night sees the return of regular Rik Moran, DJ, collector, designer and font perfectionist, who recently helped out Google with a small kerning issue. He’ll be keeping things shipshape from 6.30pm on Friday night onwards

On Saturday we welcome back Elle Andrews for her second bite of the apple. Her recent debut at Merchants Tavern was so well received we were delighted to offer her back again. She’ll be fresh from a record digging trip to India so expect some truly unfindable rarities in the mix

If you’re at the Green Man Festival this weekend, keep an eye and ear out for the Spiritland system, which will be keeping things elegantly raunchy with DJs Andy Votel, Pete Paphides, Dan Bean and others at the Round The Twist area until the early hours on Saturday night

Music at Merchants – week 10th August

August 10, 2015

11828660_10207414838233279_658596615745539283_nMusic at Merchants continues to provide a soundtrack to your steamy London summer in the heart of Shoreditch. 4 nights, 4 DJs, 2 Tannoy Westminster speakers and a million good tunes. Here it is:

On Wednesday night we welcome low-end tastemaker Joe Muggs (On The Right Tracks) – usually to be found bothering the bassbins with a mix of grime, digital dub and future-thinking electronica, he taps into his more sensitive side for his M@M debut. From Slowdive to Sam Cooke, Deep Medi to Deep Purple, he’ll play anything dreamy, grooving and loved-up

On Thursday night Jolyon Green (Low Life) makes a rare appearance on the turntables. With a sprawling collection and a digger’s ear for a rare tune, Jolyon has the touch and pacing of a true pro. As the beloved Low Life party prepares to shut up shop, longtime resident Jolyon gives us a taste of where his head is at, musically.

Merchants Tavern regular Chris Coco (Melodica) brings distinctly Balearic vibes to Friday night. Fresh off a plane from playing at the legendary Pikes Hotel in Ibiza, he’ll still have the sand between his toes (and possibly a burnt nose)

Saturday night sees another debut from a longtime friend and music love. Sketchy is the man behind London/Berlin based record label, ManMakeMusic, and founder of everyone’s favourite music platform Mixcloud. Sketchy (Nikhil to his Mum) likes to dig deep to play a varied style, tied together by groove and percussion, meandering through hip-hop, soul and boogie to afrobeat, house and beyond.

Wow! Music at Merchants continues to inspire, entertain and amaze from Wednesday to Saturday. For your consideration, here’s our DJ line up for early August

Mach V is your go-to man for a thoughtfully-picked selection of acoustic and electronic stylings, somewhere between contemplative and toe-tapping. He’ll be playing on Wednesday night from 6.30pm

Rik Moran (tothebone) travels the world on an endless mission to unearth the perfect beat, as his bulging record collection testifies. Come and hear him play soul, funk and balearic oddities on this Thursday night session

The last time we invited Darren Morgan (Love Machine) we heard nothing but love from the drinkers, the bar team and even casual passersby, enticed in by his funky downtempo stylings. Come and hear him crank up the tempo on Friday night

Nick Luscombe (Late Junction) is a M@M regular, playing a rigorously sourced and globally inspired selection of exotic and unexpected grooves and melodies. He’ll be holding things down on Saturday night
