Music at Merchants – week 28th September

September 30, 2015

We’re back with another week of the tastiest music in town at Merchants Tavern, with a rare visit from an overseas friend. Here’s how the week is shaping up…

Wednesday night finds Rob Butler from Be With Records behind the turntables. Rob’s immaculate selections have long soundtracked the bar at Merchants, so come and enjoy the journey from funk to tropicalia

On Thursday night it’s a welcome back to Chris Coco (Melodica) – he’s had a busy summer of touring and playing festivals – hear him on terra firma and with a roof above his head

This Friday we say hello to DF Tram. Dylan is a powerhouse in the San Francisco electronic scene and recently supported The Orb on their North American tour. His productions and DJing have a funky, fresh and futuristic touch – you can check out his Soundcloud here

We are delighted to welcome back Elle Andrews on Saturday night. Every time she’s played one of her deeply refined sets at Merchants we’ve ended up fielding requests and enquires from interested music lovers. Come and hear her from 6.30pm onwards

Music at Merchants – week 21st September

September 21, 2015

Four of the country’s finest selectors around will be supplying music on the Spiritland system this week. Come down and treat your ears…

DJ, VJ, good egg and general know-it-all Mach V brings his exquisite downtempo stylings to Merchants Tavern on Wednesday. Expect lush electronica and acoustic vibes from 6.30pm

We are delighted to welcome back the balearic goddess Nancy Noise for her first outing on our new sound system on Thursday night. Her Future mix for Test Pressing is still on heavy rotation at Spiritland HQ. Come and hear the cream of her record collection with something strong from the bar

Jim Breese (Balearic Recordings) plays on Friday night – the last time he was at Merchants was on a leisurely Sunday afternoon launch party for the compilation he put together with Chris Coco.

Paul Hillery is the bearded wonder behind the Folk Funk and Trippy Troubadours mix series, preposterously aligned to the sound of Spiritland. After DJ duties on the recent Polyphonic Spree tour, he’s back in the mix at Merchants Tavern on Saturday night

Music at Merchants – week 15th September

September 15, 2015

Summer is gone, autumn leaves start to fall and other musical cliches spring to mind as the seasons change. That means a few things – the breaking out of the woolly jumpers, the lighting of the fire in the bar at Merchants Tavern, and a glut of sensitive singer-songwriter albums on the stereo which didn’t quite sound right in blazing sunshine. Here’s what to expect at Merchants Tavern this week:

Rob Butler (Be With Records) makes a welcome return to the turntables on Wednesday night with a clutch of tropical funk, groovy AOR and jazz-tinged rarities

Sam Don (Anomalous Visuals) will be keeping it soulful in his M@M debut on Thursday night as he traverses deep folk, modern soul and unusual disco cuts from across the decades,  playing from a very different record bag than the one he’d take to a club

Hull’s finest son Shepdog (Nice Up!) sets aside the filthy dancehall, reggae and bashment for a night to dig into his vaults of rare funk, hairy rock and even a touch of the forbidden music (prog, not trance) on Friday night

Emma McGuigan (Chibuku, Hardlife) pitches things down from her usual tempo on Saturday night. Better known for her jacking house sets, she’ll be playing all things funky, psychedelic and modern soul, disco, boogie, off kilter pop music, hip hop. You’ll hear anything from Rotary Connection to Thundercat and all points in between.
