Music at Merchants – week of 26th October

October 26, 2015

It’s tears on the dancefloor this week as we bid an emotional adieu to London nightclubbing institution Low Life – friend and inspiration to the Spiritland sound (parts of it anyway), Bill, Frank and the DJhistory gang will always have a spot on the Spiritland system wherever we travel. With that in mind, we say ‘death to the past’ with these FIVE jocks this week

Rob Butler (Be With Records) brings a packed bag of sweet grooves on Wednesday, playing tropical funk and groovy rock from 6.30pm onwards. Spotted nodding his head at the recent Dam Funk gig in London, you might even hear a few golden age G-Funk instrumental bangers if the mood is right

Rik Moran (tothebone) is no stranger to the turntables at Merchants Tavern, having been a day one Spiritland regular. He’ll be playing the cream of his record collection, plus some recent gems from one of his covert European digging trips on Thursday night

Robert Johnston makes his long-overdue debut on the Spiritland system this week. As one of Birmingham’s more thoughtful DJs and underground club promoters, he’ll be bringing his sleazy disco sound to the bar on Friday night

Music aficionado Dan Bean (bleep43) brings the soundtrack to your Saturday night. Expect swinging jazz, rare reggae and a few rollerskating* boogie jams

Leo Walton (Amateurism) did such a tasty job on his last visit to Music at Merchants we were compelled to bring him back for a second bite of the apple. Sunday afternoons get very mellow, and you can hear him stretch out from 4 – 8pm

*please note rollerskating is not permitted at Merchants Tavern

Somehow the bar of Merchants Tavern and the autumnal mood just fit together perfectly. A time for the splash of a ride cymbal, some gentle finger picking and the odd swelling synth. Here’s how this week is looking – with the all new Sunday sessions included.

LD (NTS Radio / Spacebass) makes his Merchants Tavern debut on Wednesday night with a mix of slow jams, noodly synths and loosely quantised beats. Catch a taste of his sound here

Miles Copeland runs the appropriately named Wonderful Sound record label and shares the Spiritland philosophy of a broad palette of good music with a hearty love of sweeping orchestral film scores, tropical jazz and a thorough mooch around the Beach Boys back catalogue. He’ll be playing on Thursday night from 6.30pm onwards

You may have heard DJ Fitz when he played with Wooden Wisdom in September – he’s back on his own on Friday night for a evening of exotic treats, touching on Turkish funk, groovy prog, kraurock, afrobeat and way beyond into the musical stratosphere

Jim Lister (VERSION) is the third musical debut in this week’s programme. He brings a selection of righteous dub, fine reggae, spaced-out jazz and heavy funk as sharp as his garms. Music plays at 6.30pm until late

Piers Harrison (Soft Rocks) makes a welcome return to Merchants Tavern on Sunday afternoon from 4 – 8pm. Catch him exploring the depths of his record collection from new age music, acoustic melodies and deeply balearic exploration

After the excitement of our anniversary of last week, where we celebrated our one-year residency at Merchants Tavern, we keep quality control set to max with week with five DJs for your listening pleasure – including the return of the Sunday afternoon sessions.

On Wednesday night, Toby Tobias (Underground Disco/Rekids) bombs it back from his European travels to play slo-mo disco, sleazy funk, downtempo chuggers and more

It’s been a while since he’s played at Merchants Tavern and after a punishingly busy summer of festivals, Pete Fowler (Seahawks/Monsterism) has entered his mellow autumnal stage and will be playing suitably stress-free music on Thursday night, possibly in a chunky-knit jumper

Andrea and Mr Black (Purple Radio) have the perfect recipe for your Friday night out, with record bags stuffed with good music, played from the heart – you’ll hear soul, disco, classic rock and actual pop music played with verve, brio and just a touch of fromage

It’s a warm welcome back to Wah Wah 45s head honcho Dom Servini on Saturday night. Dom deals in funk, soul and electronic jams of the highest order, so don’t be surprised if your toes are tapping. If you’re looking for a current recommendation, The Milk on his label come highly approved by us at Spiritland

We are also delighted to bring back Sunday nights into the mix from this week onwards. For one week only, Merchants Tavern have a collaboration with Rita’s and Spiritland’s Paul Noble will be supplying the soundtrack from 6 – 10pm.

Music at Merchants – week 5th October

October 5, 2015

October! The greatest month of all, leaves turn to brown, style overtakes comfort in the wardrobe department and unlimited eating and drinking seem suddenly more acceptable. As we mark a year of Spiritland soundtracking the bar at Merchants Tavern, here’s who’ll be playing the tastiest music in town this week:

Jack Sellen (Salad Sound System) last appeared in September with his pal Aaron Fletcher from The Bees. He’ll be flying solo this Wednesday night with a mix of country rock, groovy folk and more on vinyl. Check out his Mixcloud page for a taste of the salad sound

Nick Luscombe (Late Junction/Flomotion) played in Merchants Tavern right at the start of our residency a year ago and continues to deliver the goods on a regular basis. Come down and hear his globally-minded mix on Thursday night

Leo Walton (Amateurism) makes his debut on the Spiritland system on Friday night – his Amateurism blog is an oasis of exquisite taste on the internet and home to acres of phenomenal music. The music plays from 6.30pm to close.

Mind Fair DJs (Golf Channel Recordings) play on Saturday night – Mind Fair is the musical lovechild of Dean Meredith and Ben Shenton, taking in a mutual love of hi-fi, lo-fi, Arthur Russell, tape machines, strange 80’s European records and much more. Putting out music on some of our favourite labels including International Feel, Let’s Play House, Parkway and the effortlessly great Golf Channel they’ll be spreading the net far and wide on their first session at Merchants Tavern
