Music at Merchants – week of 30th November

November 30, 2015

Winter is truly here, Christmas trees are badly stuffed into the backs of cars and suddenly a glass of port looks far more appealing than it did a couple of months ago. Come and get cosy by our fire, order a Ruby Rose or two and let the DJs of Spiritland be your guide through the dark evenings

On Wednesday night, Justin Quirk takes to the Spiritland turntables for the first time, playing a set traversing from The Congos to Gong and all points in between

Thursday night sees a long-overdue welcome back to Frank Tope (Wild Geese/0800 Dinosaur) – you’re in for a treat as the disco librarian himself plays a rare bar set from his deep crates and works out how to plug his dub siren into our mixer

Nikhil Shah (Man Make Music) takes a moment away from his main job of overseeing the music lover’s best friend Mixcloud and instead brings the sound of the Man Make Music collective to Merchants Tavern on Friday night. Expect deep electronic rarities and the thoughtful end of hiphop

Dan Bean (bleep43) is a day one Spiritland friend, the loving owner of a preposterously good vinyl collection as well the original Bozak we launched with last year, and a DJ and selector of the first order. Come and hear him play across the boards on Saturday night

Sam Don (Anomalous Visuals) takes the reigns on Sunday afternoon, playing his blend of soul, jazz, AOR and more from 4 to 8pm.

Music at Merchants – week of 23rd November

November 23, 2015

Let’s face it – it’s taters out there. Come and and get snug by our blazing fire in the bar of Merchants Tavern, with five (alright, six) DJs playing music to warm the heart and soul on our tasty sound system. Here’s how the weeks is shaping up:

On Wednesday night, Ben Morris (Kudos Records) makes his debut. Anyone in the music industry who has tried to handle the fiddly bit between the record coming off the press and making it to the shops will know about Kudos, distributors of fine vinyl.  Ben is creaming off the best bits of his preposterously large record collection to play a chilled set at Merchants Tavern this week

Thursday finds our friends David Sacks and Hennessey Williams aka The Running playing cosmic jazz, deep afro and organic funk from 6.30pm

On Friday night Nick Luscombe (Flomotion/Late Junction) returns for another dose of globally-inspired music, taking in all points from Shibuya to Stockholm

It’s been a while, but we’re delighted to welcome back Wrongtom (Tru Thoughts) to the turntables on Saturday night. Putting aside his bassbin-bothering productions, he’ll be playing the mellower end of his 30 -year deep record collection, touching on jazz, ska, doo-wop, electro and much more

Sundays at Merchants Tavern are a thing – a very chilled thing. Come and hear the system singing sweetly to the sounds of Spiritland’s Paul Noble, playing swinging jazz, chilled electronica and cosmic noodlings from 4 – 8pm

Music at Merchants – week of 16th November

November 16, 2015

“I think that music was created to bring our vibration back to its intrinsic state. It’s human nature to create music that readjusts the vibrations distorted by history. That’s why I’m so certain that music is a form of healing before it is an art.” – Dr. Masaru Emoto – Hidden Messages in Water

Sam Don (Anomalous Visuals) will be playing music from the heart on his return visit to Merchants Tavern on Wednesday night as he traverses deep folk, modern soul and unusual disco cuts from across the decades,  drawing from a very different record bag than the one he’d take to a club

Chris Coco (Melodica) is just the man for your fill of soothing vibes on a Thursday night. Electronic and acoustic deepness comes as standard

Rik Moran (tothebone) makes one of his regular appearances behind the decks on Friday night, playing music sourced from his global travels. For a taste of his other talents, head to his Flaneurism photography blog

Ray Mang (Mangled/DFA) is back (briefly) from his international disc jockeying activities and has brought along Kate Holland for her long-overdue debut on the Spiritland sound system. Nothing but joy on Saturday night with an unpredictable mix of disco, soul, funk and actual pop

Sundays are a time to stretch out and Rob Butler from Be With Records is perfectly positioned for this task. Funky rock, tropical grooves and languid R’n’B are all on the menu from 4 – 8pm

Music at Merchants – week of 9th November

November 9, 2015

You’ll have a smile on your face too with five nights of the best music selectors in London in the bar at Merchants Tavern (accompanied by a roaring fire and a stiff drink or two)

Kicking off proceedings on Wednesday night is Rob Hyde (Tanzmusik/Chips With Everything), playing his distinctive mix of gentle prog, funky krautrock and anything else pleasing to the ear

After rocking the crowds at the recent epic farewell to the long-running Low Life parties, Jolyon Green plays his deeply refined take on the balearic sound and more on Thursday night. The perfect antidote to the dark autumnal nights

Jack Sellen (Salad Soundsystem) is no stranger to the Spiritland system at Merchants Tavern and on Friday night, brings a packed bag of country rock, jangly pop and obscure funk

It’s been far too long since Rob Smoughton (Black Peaches/Grovesnor) played music round at our place. He’s had a good excuse though, travelling the world with Hot Chip as part of the live band, as well as putting out excellent music with his new project Black Peaches. Check it out here. Come and hear him in action on Saturday night from 6.30pm

Phil Mison (Cantoma) played on the Spiritland system the very week we launched in October 2014, and continues to inspire and astound with his productions and DJ sets at some of the world’s more forward-thinking dancefloors. Sunday afternoon is the perfect time to come and hear him get out there from 4 – 8pm

Music at Merchants – week of 2nd November

November 2, 2015

We couldn’t hold out any longer… the Christmas LPs have gone up in the windows at Merchants Tavern, we couldn’t give a flying figgy pudding to those who say we went too early. Here’s who’s supplying the soundtrack to your November:

On Wednesday, journalist, DJ, curator, bass enthusiast and general musical authority Joe Muggs (Boiler Room/FACT) plays a deep mix of refined music from his towering pile of promos and further afield. From shoegaze to afropop, from Crosby, Stills & Nash to Mala & Coki, Joe plays anything as long as it’s warm, inviting and conducive to autumnal boozing by our fire.

On Thursday, Julian Mash (The Idler) plays a seasonally appropriate selection of spooky 1970s English folk, double-dipped acid acoustic guitars and generally thyme-tinged witchy business. Expect to hear music from Mellow Candle, The Incredible String Band, Pentangle and more.

Elle Andrews makes a welcome return to the turntables on Friday night, playing life-affirming music from the soul, paced to perfection – starting at 6.30pm until late.

On Saturday night sees our old pal DJ Shepdog (Nice Up!) playing a mix of funky prog, rare reggae and cosmic noodling. Why not come by?

Jim Breese (Balearic Recs) makes himself at home on Sunday afternoon, playing deep balearic oddities. You’ll know his style from the Ku De Ta and Balearic compilations. Expect an emotionally moving closer to your weekend from 4 -8pm
