Music at Merchants – week of 14th December

The end of 2015 is fast approaching. If you were looking for a spot to see out the old and see in the new, feel free to head to Merchants Tavern on New Year’s Eve where Spiritland stalwart Rik Moran (tothebone) will be playing a pleasingly lively set of disco and balearic toe-tappers in the bar. Meanwhile here’s how this week is shaping up:

On Wednesday night, we welcome Adventures In Paradise for their debut at Merchants Tavern. Michelle Kelly and Katie Barber join forces to play a deeply refined selection of blissed-out music. Head to their Soundcloud page for a taste of what to expect

Nick Luscombe returns to his second home behind the turntables at Merchants Tavern on Thursday night, where you can hear the globally-inspired, forward-thinking music he’s known for sharing on his Late Junction and Flomotion radio shows

Hull’s finest son DJ Shepdog (Nice Up! Records) is your man in the Santa hat on Friday night. Playing funk, soul, hiphop, dub and a touch of groovy prog from his deep crates, he brings more than a touch of sauce to your sausage roll

Mark GV Taylor brings the sound of his Reference Point nights to Merchants Tavern on Saturday night. Drawing on his work as a compiler of many excellent albums, he plays an impossibly rare and tasty mix of AOR, library music, soundtracks, deep soul and more

DJ Fitz played with his pals Wooden Wisdom in September and blew us away with his deep selection of Turkish prog, psych and Krautrock – come and hear him in the mellow Sunday afternoon slot from 4 – 8pm this week. Here’s a mix as an idea of where he’s coming from

Music at Merchants – week of 7th December

Just to add to the familiar feeling of time speeding up as the year races to an end, we have a bumper-packed five nights of music for you at Merchants Tavern this week, with friends old and new gathering around the burning fire, wassailing and so on. Here’s who’s on:

Andrea Nibbers and Mr Black (Purple Radio) were built for the party season, with a record bag that veers from classic to shameless in the funk, disco and soul areas. Come and feel the force from 6.30pm on Wednesday night

Musical royalty Nancy Noise dons a festive hat for her Thursday night session, playing Brazilian funk, oddities from the White Isle and anything else that tickles her ear

It’s a rare month at Merchants that doesn’t have Ray Mang (Mangled/DFA Records) in it – come and hear him pick out some tasty disco joints and and slo-mo funk on Friday night

Mind Fair disrupted a lot of end-of-the-year lists, delivering one of the most satisfying albums this year on Golf Channel, and their DJ sets don’t disappoint either. Dean Meredith and Ben Shenton take you to the lesser-explored places on the musical spectrum on Saturday night

Sunday afternoon finds Apiento (Test Pressing) behind the turntables on a rare visit to Merchants Tavern. One of the creative forces behind one of the defining tunes of 2015  – We Start Over – Apiento plays a rarified mix of deep electronic and acoustic music from the soul on Sunday afternoon from 4 – 8pm

Finally, away from the cosy confines of Merchants Tavern, Spiritland will be supplying the music for launch of the new ICA exhibition ‘Radical Disco‘ this Tuesday night with DJs Bill Brewster, Piers Harrison and Severino touching on all points Italo and Cosmic and Afro.

This year we’ve prepared a feasting menu to help you ring in the New Year in true Tavern style – over plates of lovingly prepared, intensely seasonal food and great wine for £60 a head (plus wine). See menu below. We’ll also have Music at Merchants regular Rik Moran of tothebone fame spinning some fine vinyl (think: smooth disco, Balearic pop and feel-good NYE bangers) from 7.30 pm 12.30 am.

Here at the Tavern we believe in seasonal cooking, and celebrating the different flavours each chapter of the year brings.

So for us, Christmas represents a time to pay homage to the traditions of this festive time of year, but in our own style. The set menu below is our take on festive feasting – featuring dishes and flavours we all associate with December but with Neil’s own unique seasonal stamp given to each.

As Merchants of good fortune, we also want to ensure that Christmas is a time of merriment –where good wine flows as well as the conversation at each table! So come in and enjoy a meal with us and take stock of the year that’s just past over some delicious fare. We’re also excited to announce we’ve got a new Coravin wine system, which means there will always be a bottle of something extra special on hand to try (by the glass)!

Coravin Wine System

We’ve recently become the proud owners of a Coravin Wine System – which means we can serve wine by the glass without removing the cork. This means we can open amazing bottles without the pressure of having to serve the full bottle. This all because the cork remains intact so the wine inside is preserved so we can continue serving a new bottle for months or even years to come (although we sincerely doubt it’ll hang around that long). Next time you’re in, ask what we’ve got on the go via the Coravin and enjoy some truly special drops!
