Music at Merchants – week starting 25th January

January 25, 2016

Music at Merchants continues to bring you the tastiest music in London, week in and week out. Here’s how things are shaping up for this week:

On Wednesday Mach V (Echaskech) stoops to conquer as he brings his towering frame to our slightly-too-low turntables. Expect delicious delectronica and gentle acoustic meanderings from this experienced selector on Wednesday night

Chris Coco (Melodica) is back in the country after what looks like an inspirational recent musical journey to Bali and beyond. Come and hear his take on all things tropical and Balearic on Thursday night. You can also check out his weekly radio show here

It’s been a while since Kirk Degiorgio (Machine/RBMA) paid us a visit at Merchants Tavern. He’ll be bringing a mix of deep soul, spaced-out funk and rare cosmic jazz with him on his Friday night set, before he drops into Gilles Peterson’s show on 6Music the next day

Dan Bean (bleep43) is one of our Spiritland secret weapons. With an endless musical thirst and a pristine record collection heading off in all and every direction, he’ll be playing dub, afro, boogie and more on Saturday night

Sam Don (Anomalous Visuals) is your man for maximum relaximum on Sunday afternoon. If you want to come and hear the system in a calm setting with a roaring fire on the go, here’s your chance

London Burns Night at Merchants Tavern

January 19, 2016

Burns Night London Merchants Tavern

The best place to spend Burns Night (the 25th of January) in London this year? We’d argue it’s right here at Merchants Tavern. With the below specially prepared menu (£40 a head) Neil Borthwick not only pays homage to his Scottish heritage but also to his love of seasonal, French inspired cooking.

A whisky flight will also be available on the night, where you can sample a selection of some of Scotland’s best water of life (Johnny Walker Blue Label, Talisker 18 Year Old, Lagavulin 16 Year Old for £25). The bar will also be serving a Burns Night cocktail – Robbie’s Dram – with Laphroig 10 Year Old peated whisky, Drambuie, grapefruit and honey. To that we say, sláinte!

To secure your place for Burns Night or for general bookings head to our website, call (020 7060 5335) or email us.

Music at Merchants – week of 18th January

January 18, 2016

Music at Merchants continues to serve up the tastiest musical offerings in East London for your delectation. In a frankly weird week where the ripples of the passing of the great man continue to reverberate throughout the musical and cultural universe, we’ve particularly enjoyed these musical tributes from JD Twitch and James Endeacott. If you’re looking for one unexpected story in the mass outpouring of thoughts and remembrances, read this remarkable tale from one superfan. Here’s who’s on at Merchants Tavern this week:

Kicking off five nights of music is Pasta Paul (Kosmonaut), fresh off the train from Mancunia on Wednesday night. He’ll be joining the dots between folk, funk, jazz and soul on an all-vinyl odyssey. It’s his birthday, so come give him a hug.

Rik Moran (tothebone) plays for the first time since his marathon NYE set on Thursday night. Expect seasonally-appropriate Balearic picks, rare soul jams and a music policy that edges dangerously up to our no four-on-the-floor policy.

DJ Fitz is your man for all manner of exotic psych, funky prog, krautrock and bewilderingly hard to find Turkish music on Friday night. If you’re after a taster of how deep his choices go, have a listen here

Paul Noble is the ears behind Spiritland, and plays on Saturday night with a mix of smooth AOR, grinding Hammond organs, hairy rock and high-end pop music from 6.30pm. Don’t be surprised if Station To Station gets played in full either.

Miles Copeland is head honcho of one of our favourite record labels Wonderfulsound – he’ll be playing a very easy Sunday afternoon mix of OSTs, acoustic folk, big strings and possibly a couple of cuts from their latest release Sea Organ – a soothing field recording of the 70 metre sound installation on the Adriatic coast. As odd, soothing and magical as you might imagine. It all happens from 4 – 8pm

Hot Chip spin records for Music at Merchants

sausage roll

This Wednesday the 13th of January Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor and his musical and real-life brother Angus will step behind our decks to spin some fine vinyl from 6.30 pm. We’d argue it’s the perfect excuse to pop down to the Tavern and sample our bar menu and cocktail list – which features our near-famous Venison Sausage roll with brown sauce (as pictured above).

With Burns Night fast approaching, Neil is currently hatching a bespoke menu to help celebrate this great Scottish tradition in true Tavern Style. Expect his usual seasonal fare with a distinctly Scottish stamp on every dish. Oh, and a dram or two. Watch this space for more menu details!

Music at Merchants – week of 11th January

January 11, 2016

David Bowie – 1947 – 2016

Where to begin and where to end? The brightest star in our musical cosmos has burnt out and our hearts are broken. Brave, beautiful and restless until the end. Rest in peace and know that you were loved. The music plays on this week.

Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip) returns to the Spiritland system once more on Wednesday night, this time accompanied by his musical and literal brother Angus, playing a mix of rare reggae and soul from 6.30pm onwards

On Thursday nightBen Morris (Kudos Records) plays at Merchants Tavern. Anyone in the music industry who has tried to handle the fiddly bit between the record coming off the press and making it to the shops will know about Kudos, distributors of fine vinyl.  Ben is creaming off the best bits of his preposterously large record collection to play a downtempo and distinctly eclectic set

Editor-in-Chief-About-Town Joe Muggs is at the controls on Friday night, taking a swerve away from the bass-heavy futurism he’s know for to root around in the mellower end of his record collection. Slowdive to Sam Cooke, Deep Medi to Deep Purple, he’ll play anything dreamy, grooving and loved-up.

Darren Morgan (Love Machine) is a fellow traveller on the road to better sound quality and musical bliss, putting on the refined Love Machine parties. He’ll be packing his record bags and heading to ours to play on Saturday night. Check out his style here

Music at Merchants – week of 6th January

January 6, 2016

Hello, good evening and welcome to 2016. The Christmas albums have come down, the tree shiftily abandoned in the street and the Charlie Brown Christmas OST put back on the shelf until next year. Rik Moran ably handled the music at the Merchants NYE shindig, with a classic one-two at the turn of the year – God Only Knows into All Night Long. Sometimes you just have to go with the masters. In that spirit, Music at Merchants returns for a bracing start to the year

Wednesday finds Spiritland’s Paul Noble playing all manner of jazz, soul, AOR and country (the good stuff) from 6.30pm onwards

After a stunning evening’s music in December, Adventures in Paradise are back in action on Thursday night playing a deep selection of super-sophisticated sounds. Get your 2016 off to a chilled start with their mixes here

On Friday night we welcome back Liam Dystant (Spacebass/NTS Radio) for a serious dose of funk, soul, fusion and other good stuff. Check out his Spacebass show on NTS here

Saturday night finds DJ, tastemaker and man-about-town Graham Erickson playing post-punk, leftfield disco and forward thinking dub music until close

Sunday afternoons are a mellow affair and Nick Luscombe (Flomotion/Late Junction) is your captain on a trip around globally-inspired music, taking in all points from Shibuya to Stockholm
