Music at Merchants – week of 30th May

May 31, 2016

Thanks to all who came to our Prince ‘Musicology’ party at the Ace Hotel on Friday night. Bill Brewster, Zaf Lovevinyl, Wrongtom and Alexis Taylor turned it up and turned it out, from the deepest cuts to the anthems. It was nothing less than an emotionally cathartic experience for Prince lovers amongst us, with a massive side order of ass-shaking. Musicology was probably the only track that didn’t get played. Here’s who’s playing on the Spiritland system this week:

Donna Leake makes her Merchants Tavern debut on Wednesday night, setting us up nicely for the week. She’ll be joining the dots between spiritual jazz, fusion and Afrobeat. Check her out in action here

On Thursday night, Editor-In-Chief-About-Town Joe Muggs shows his sensitive side as he plays around in the downtempo end of his collection.

Mark ‘GV’ Taylor brings the sound of Reference Point to Merchants on Friday night. He’ll be joined by George Arthur and their special guest from Spain, Herminio Afonso. As ever, expect impossibly rare AOR, funk and Americana from these selectors.

Rik Moran is Mr Saturday Night. Bringing forth balearic offerings from his global travels, he’ll be treading the fine line between the dancefloor and the lounge.

Music at Merchants – week of Monday 23rd May

May 23, 2016

The Spiritland team were out in Berlin this week, checking out the new and somewhat radical sound system in the basement of Soho House. Funktion One have built something rather special involving eight towers of speakers, half of which are dedicated to delivering the ‘difference’ in the signal – the spacious reverb and extra bits and bobs at the edges of the stereo signal. Too technical to go into but Slave To The Rhythm sounded incredible and that’s the main thing.

In other news, we are limbering up for our one-off Prince bash this Friday night at Miranda, Ace Hotel. DJs on the night at Bill Brewster, Alexis Taylor, Wrongtom and The Mighty Zaf. Tickets are here, only £10 and all proceeds go to Youth Music. Here’s who’s playing at Merchants Tavern this week:

Hilit Kolet and Anna Haleta are representing Tel Aviv in style on Wednesday night. Drop in from 6.30pm onwards to hear these two selectors play a sunshine-inspired b2b set made up of Italo Disco, Brazilian funk, Afro-Cuban Jazz and German Synth Pop.

Jolyon Green takes a break from playing with his new valve amplifier to bring the cream of his exquisite record collection to the Spiritland system on Thursday night. Here he is on a rare yacht rock tip for Test Pressing

Nick Luscombe plays on Friday night. Those who hear him on presenting duties on BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction will understand how far he goes into the music. Global goodness is assured

Dan Beaumont (Dance Tunnel/Chapter 10) joins us on Saturday night after far too long away from our turntables. The last time he came through on the Spiritland system, the selection went from Adeva to the Theme From Howard’s Way. You try pulling that off at the Panorama Bar (actually, it would probably go down a treat)

Elle Andrews is your Sunday selector. The mix goes from soothing electronica to righteous dub. The music plays from 4 – 8pm.

Music at Merchants – week starting 16th May

May 16, 2016

Pet Sounds turns 50 this week (along with Blonde on Blonde, which we’re less bothered about) and the sun seems to be out, so we’re celebrating big time. A good place to start is Katie Puckrik’s show on the enduring legacy of this remarkable piece of art. In other news, we’re throwing a big PRINCE PARTY along with our pals at the Ace Hotel. Four DJs, one purple light, all night long. You’ll find Alexis Taylor, Bill Brewster, Wrongtom and The Mighty Zaf getting up and getting down from 9pm.  It’s an unabashed celebration of the man, with all proceeds going to Youth Music. Tickets are here.

Here’s who’s playing at Merchants Tavern this week:

Jack Sellen (Salad Sound System) is back in action on Wednesday night with his trademark blend of wholesome country rock, smooth AOR and pastoral pop.

Adventures in Paradise warmly invite you to shake your coconuts on Thursday night, with a mix of slo-mo chuggers, tropical non-house and wonky beat music. As ever, a trip to their Soundcloud page is strongly encouraged

Darren Morgan (Love Machine) plays on Friday night. A fellow traveller on the road to audio nirvana, you’ll hear his tasty selections in the bar from 6.30pm

Simon Lee (Faze Action) holds it down on Saturday night. Expect his usual mix of rare soul, killer disco jams and latin shufflers from the depths of his collection

Mr Black and Andrea are usually to be found creating disco mayhem on the Friday night shift. Come and see them play on Sunday afternoon from 4 – 8pm with a more considered selection of fine music, old and new

Music at Merchants – week starting 9th May

May 9, 2016

The sun came out and everyone lost their mind. Meanwhile, the Spiritland team were off looking at esoteric tonearms and ultrasonic record cleaners in a cavernous exhibition centre in Munich. Sometimes you just have to suffer for your art. This week will largely be spent digesting the new Radiohead album and prepping for the 50th anniversary of Pet Sounds next week. Meanwhile, here’s what will be happening in the bar at Merchants Tavern this week

On Wednesday night, Carl Gosling (Heavenly Jukebox) makes his debut at MT. Heavenly are one of our favourite crews around, and you can expect nothing but good music from Carl, touching on jangly country and summery pop

Thursday night finds LD (Spacebass/NTS) at the controls. You’ll recognise him for his mix of high-sheen funk, cosmic jazz and smoothed out fusion. Expect a few Prince rarities in the mix too

Ben Morris (Kudos) is your selector for Friday night. Running the Kudos distribution empire means access to a ridiculous amount of good music, early releases and rare business. Let the man guide your evening’s entertainment

Harv Nagi did such a spot on job when he played at Merchants Tavern a few weeks ago, we thought we wouldn’t waste any time in getting him back. He’ll be playing deep jazz, rare latin, tasty boogaloo and more on Saturday night

Rob Butler (Be With Records) eases you out of the weekend with a 4 – 8pm session on Sunday afternoon. Nothing but the highest quality music from this experienced collector and jock

P.S. Keep the 27th of May free, we’re having a party

Music at Merchants – week of 2nd May

May 3, 2016

Still reeling from the Prince news, we’re taking comfort from the huge amount of rare, unseen or just overlooked material that has been popping up online. This soundcheck footage from Osaka in 1992 feels particularly intimate. Here’s who’s playing in the bar at Merchants Tavern this week:

It’s been too long since Sam Don played on our system. That will be rectified on Wednesday night when he comes through with a bag of mellow goodies for your listening pleasure

John ‘JP’ Paddick makes his Merchants debut on Thursday night. You can expect groovy folk, country rock, Steely Dan, Jimmy Buffett and all that good stuff from this heavyweight collector

Steve KIW (Balearic Assassins of Love) finally gets busy on our system on Friday night. He’ll be playing deep soul, sleazy disco, heartfelt chuggers and more

Count Skylarkin’ is holding things down on Saturday night with a mix of reggae, rocksteady, ska, dub and more. He recently paid an incredible tribute to his dear friend and mentor DJ Derek at his funeral – you can read the beautiful words here

On Sunday afternoon, the tallest selector in the Spiritland camp Mach V stoops to conquer, as he plays a fully relaxing selection of acoustic and electronic music for the soul
