Music at Merchants – week of 27th June

Well, that’s that. Brotherly and sisterly love to all is on our minds right now. We still love you to bits, Europe, so don’t expect to see any fewer DJs from the continent behind the turntables in our corner of the planet. And the same goes for the gorgeous Euro boys and girls putting in the hours at the bar at Merchants Tavern. ANYWAY. Bernie Worrell has left the planet and that’s worth marking. Here’s the Wizard of Woo on a half hour jam on Flashlight which has been keeping spirits high here.  Here’s how the week is shaping up:

Tony Higgins is back for a second bite at the Spiritland cherry on Wednesday night. One of the deepest jazz heads out there, he’ll be playing from his private vaults of pristine vinyl, touch on all things modal, spiritual, Japanese and noodly.

Greg Belson (Dublab/45 Live) brings his frankly unreal record collection to Merchants Tavern for the first time on Thursday night. Those that know Greg from his Divine Chord radio show will know the man is a gospel authority of the first order, particularly ploughing his furlough of funky and rare gospel jams. By all accounts his set at Block 9 at Glastonbury this weekend was off the (blessed) hook. Check out his new compilation Divine Disco for more of his fine work, and expect a night of 45s only action

Rob Hyde and Pete Gofton return with the sound of Tanzmusik on Friday night. You can expect the usual mix of unusual music from these two – socially acceptable prog rock, toe tapping Krautrock vibes and psych you wouldn’t be embarrassed to play to your mum

Damo (Downlow Radio) and Tee Cardaci are your Saturday night selectors. Playing across the board out there music to soundtrack to your weekend, join Damo and his guest from Rio for the night, DJ and producer Tee Cardaci for an evening of soul-soothing vibes

We cast our vote for the tastiest music in town this week, with four jocks doing what they do best. Here’s how it looks for those dodging the Pilton mud:

Miles Copeland from Wonderfulsound Records is here to soothe your soul in troubled times. From AOR to OSTs, Beatles to Bacharach, Miles steers the Spiritland system with a steady hand on Wednesday night

On Thursday we’ll be marking the EU referendum in the only way we know how: musically. Spiritland resident Nick Luscombe (Late Junction/Flomotion) will playing music from across the European Union – from Air to Aeroplane, Gina X to Gino Vannelli. Come and cast your vote from 6.30pm

LD (Spacebass/NTS Radio) holds things together on Friday night. Whether you’re celebrating or commiserating, you can depend on LD playing some smoothed-out funk, squelchy synth jams and futuristic beats from around the universe

Elle Andrews continues her monthly residency with another dose of music for the soul on Saturday night. Come through and feel the raw power of positive vibrations

114100177Love is the message, today, tomorrow and forever. Here’s what’s happening at Merchants Tavern this week:

On Wednesday night, two of East London’s primo soundsystems swap shirts for one night of audio bliss. With a solemn promise not to wreck each other’s needles or rinse each other’s bar tabs, the Brilliant Corners team Amit, Aneesh and Donna head over to Merchants Tavern with some deep vibes, while Paul Noble and Dan Bean from the Spiritland camp leg it up Kingsland Road to play on the Brilliant Corners Klipschorns. Nice.

Thursday night finds Sam Don back in action from 6.30pm. He’ll be going heavy on the soul tip in preparation for a gig in Briz at the weekend. Expect the usual high quality music you can almost dance to

Dom Servini (Wah Wah 45s) brings a bag of goodness on Friday night. Reclaiming the sacred sound of the funk from the fancy dress fakers, he’ll be playing intergalactic sounds until late

Paul Hillery (Folk Funk and Trippy Troubadours) joins us on Saturday night with a bag of hairy rock, pastoral pop and good vibes

Music at Merchants – week of 6th June

June 6, 2016

June is now starting to feel like a proper June. Birds are singing in the trees, barbecues are fired up across our great capital and things are stirring in the Spiritland camp too, which we’ll be able to reveal soon. Plus next week, we have a very special one-off event on Wednesday night with some local buddies. Anyway, enough with the cryptic messages, here’s what’s happening in the bar at Merchants Tavern this week:

Rob Butler (Be With Records) is back in action on Wednesday night, starting off four nights of music. Rob keeps it strictly high quality and full of heart.

Michelle Kelly (Adventures In Paradise) is a familiar face behind the turntables a Merchants Tavern. She’s playing her magical mix of slo-mo groovers, sunshine-friendly shufflers and more on Thursday night

Chris Coco (Melodica) is all over the country, and the world, this summer. We’ve got him for a Friday night set of his usual aural deepness – plus a reminder that his regular radio show is still a thing of greatness

Chris Galloway (Soft Rocks) makes a rare appearance at ours on Saturday night. You’ll know him from his endlessly deep record collection, elegant DJ sets and insatiable nose for the rare and unheard. Come and hear him in action from 6.30pm onwards
