Music at Merchants – week of 25th July

July 25, 2016

That’s right! This week at Merchants Tavern looks a lot like this:

Shepdog (Nice Up!) is at the controls on Wednesday night. You can expect the usual funky happenings from him, with a heavy dose of soul and reggae in there for good measure

Michelle Kelly and Katie Barber are Adventures In Paradise – and make all your tropical dreams come true on Thursday night. Pop by for a sharpener and bask in the swinging slo-mo sounds of these two collectors and selectors

Rik Moran (tothebone) is a day one Spiritland jock, and brings his balearic stylings to the fore on Friday night. New wave, No Wave, New Beat and possibly even New Jack Swing are all on the menu

Mr Black is flying solo without his disco double Andrea on Saturday night. Expect music that touches the soul, from emotional pop to close-to-the-edge disco from 6.30pm onwards

Also – we have some news. After a two year residency at Merchants Tavern, Spiritland are packing up the headphones, leaving a long final tune playing and moving on. What was only supposed to be a three month jaunt (don’t call it a pop-up) in the Autumn of 2014 turned into a full-blown, two year love affair – thanks Neil, Angela, Dee and all the gang at Merchants Tavern for digging our noodly stylings, for all the deep-fried oysters, the glasses of Gewurztraminer and the many, many Go Hartnett Or Go Homes.

Music at Merchants takes August off to calm down a bit, and relaunches in September. Meanwhile you’ll find Spiritland getting settled into a brand new space in King’s Cross at the start of September.

Sounds have been from Spiritland x

Music at Merchants – week of 18th July

July 18, 2016

Come and cool off in the bar at Merchants Tavern this week with a sharpener and a selection of ice cold DJs from around the world

Regular selector Sam Don eases you into the week on Wednesday night with a blend of slow-mo burners and jazzy ticklers from 6.30pm

On Thursday night we’re joined by a few of the leading players in the São Paulo music scene: Gui Scott, Bruno Protti and Caio Tabard (Gop Tun) drop by to give us a taste of some Brazilian vibes

Harv Nagi returns for some distinctly summery action on Friday night, playing from his deep collection of jazz, funk and latin rarities. You can get a taste of what he’s about from his radio show here

We are delighted to welcome Manu Archeo on Saturday night – head honcho of Archeo Recordings, devoted to unearthing and reissuing Italian rarities from the 70s and 80s, he’ll be jetting in from Florence to play from 6.30pm until late

Music at Merchants – week of 11th July

July 11, 2016

Spirits at Spiritland HQ were significantly lifted by Stevie Wonder this weekend with a masterclass in musicianship and good vibes. It turns out he also wants to get in on the DJ action too, making his London debut as DJ Tick Tick Boom. We’re talking about getting him in for a session. Until he confirms, here’s who’s playing at Merchants Tavern:

Andy Smith kicks off our four nights of music on Wednesday with a high-grade selection of funk, soul, jazz and blues, mainly on 45s. Come and hear this unstoppable digger in the cosy surrounds of the bar at Merchants Tavern

David Sacks and Francis Redman are your Thursday night selectors. Bringing the same open-minded and rarefied approach to their DJ sets as they do to their radio show on NTS Radio, quality is assured from these two

Elle Andrews is back for her monthly session at Merchants on Friday night with a bag of assorted and undefinable deepness. Come down and hear her in action from 6.30pm

Jim Breese is holding things down on Saturday night, after what looks like a particularly tasty run of gigs on the White Isle. He’ll be keeping things easy breezy on the night, and you can check out the very summery latest release on his Balearic Records label here

Music at Merchants – week of 4th July

July 5, 2016

We continue to bring you some of the tastiest beats in town, each and every week. Here’s who’s in action on the Spiritland system at Merchants Tavern this week:

Count Skylarkin’ should be recovered from an immense Glastonbury by the time he reaches us on Wednesday night. Those that made it there would have heard the ruckus emanating from his DJ Derek tribute on the Shangri-La stage. Pretty sure we could feel the bass here in London. Expect the usual blend of ska, dub, rocksteady, reggae and more on Wednesday night

Leo Zero crosses boundaries and breaks down borders with effortless grace on Thursday night. Go-go meets post-punk, highlife meets low lives, and Leo may even play some actual pop music. The action starts at 6.30pm

Rob Butler (Be With Records) always comes through with a high-grade selection of funk, soul, AOR and balearic-infused music when he plays at MT. Catch him on Friday night

Ben Morris (Kudos) is one of those DJs forever a playing a track you’ve never heard of, and now have to spend your life tracking down. Expect a brace of toe tappers from him on Saturday night

Music at Merchants – week of 27th June

June 27, 2016

Well, that’s that. Brotherly and sisterly love to all is on our minds right now. We still love you to bits, Europe, so don’t expect to see any fewer DJs from the continent behind the turntables in our corner of the planet. And the same goes for the gorgeous Euro boys and girls putting in the hours at the bar at Merchants Tavern. ANYWAY. Bernie Worrell has left the planet and that’s worth marking. Here’s the Wizard of Woo on a half hour jam on Flashlight which has been keeping spirits high here.  Here’s how the week is shaping up:

Tony Higgins is back for a second bite at the Spiritland cherry on Wednesday night. One of the deepest jazz heads out there, he’ll be playing from his private vaults of pristine vinyl, touch on all things modal, spiritual, Japanese and noodly.

Greg Belson (Dublab/45 Live) brings his frankly unreal record collection to Merchants Tavern for the first time on Thursday night. Those that know Greg from his Divine Chord radio show will know the man is a gospel authority of the first order, particularly ploughing his furlough of funky and rare gospel jams. By all accounts his set at Block 9 at Glastonbury this weekend was off the (blessed) hook. Check out his new compilation Divine Disco for more of his fine work, and expect a night of 45s only action

Rob Hyde and Pete Gofton return with the sound of Tanzmusik on Friday night. You can expect the usual mix of unusual music from these two – socially acceptable prog rock, toe tapping Krautrock vibes and psych you wouldn’t be embarrassed to play to your mum

Damo (Downlow Radio) and Tee Cardaci are your Saturday night selectors. Playing across the board out there music to soundtrack to your weekend, join Damo and his guest from Rio for the night, DJ and producer Tee Cardaci for an evening of soul-soothing vibes
