Vegetarian Week

May 10, 2017

As huge fans of seasonal vegetables, we are celebrating Vegetarian Week (15 – 21st May) by showcasing the best of the best. Neil has created a special vegetarian tasting menu, available all week, featuring dishes such as Brittany artichoke barigoule, dried black olive & radish, and the vegetable celebration that is All of springs vegetables, lovage oil & sorrel.

Choose from 3 course, 5 course or 7 course menus (£28.50, £42, £60 respectively), totally vegetarian & gluten free and easily adaptable for vegans. Our grand finale on Sunday will be the Nut Roast served with all the trimmings.

Burns Night At Merchants Tavern 2017

January 6, 2017

The best place to spend Burns Night (the 25th of January) in London this year? We’d argue it’s right here at Merchants Tavern. With the below specially prepared menu (£45 a head) Neil Borthwick not only pays homage to his Scottish heritage.

A whisky flight will also be available on the night, where you can sample a selection of some of Scotland’s best water of life (Johnny Walker Blue Label, Talisker 18 Year Old, Lagavulin 16 Year Old for £25). The bar will also be serving a Burns Night cocktail – Robbie’s Dram – with Laphroig 10 Year Old peated whisky, Drambuie, grapefruit and honey. To that we say, sláinte!

To secure your place for Burns Night or for general bookings head to our website, call (020 7060 5335) or email

Fabrique Bakery

October 13, 2016

Last day tomorrow to try pastries from Fabrique Bakery, we are open early from 9am so grab a croissant, an AllPress coffee and chill by the log fire.
Fabrique Bakery is a stone oven bakery from Sweden, meaning the time and TLC they put into their bakes offers a unique taste alternative to factory-baked products.

We love our Shoreditch neighbourhood so each month we’ll be turning the spotlight over to them; whether it be a Merchants regular or a local supplier, artist, musician, or entrepreneur.

In the Spotlight this month is Shoreditch local Nazifa Movsoumova; founder and owner of Modern Society, the luxury store on nearby Redchurch Street. Nazifa believes that East London is packed with inspirational talent, so when it came to her opening a permanent retail space, Redchurch Street felt like a no brainer. Nazifa’s given us her tips for Shoreditch newbies, check them out here.

Tipple of choice
It’s got to be a classic Negroni.

Brunch or Lunch
Brunch is an obvious choice. It lasts longer and normally includes a Bloody Mary.

Insiders tip
Blixen restaurant in London is a must visit. It has a stunning garden at the back decorated by our favourite florists Grace & Thorn. Embassy East on Hoxton Street is renowned for a great for Sunday brunch. Their delicious poached eggs and coffee are the perfect hangover cure. If you want a quiet oasis, visit Petersham Nurseries with it’s beautiful glasshouse restaurant.

Big night out
Cocktail bar Joyeux Bordel is a hidden gem, tucked away on Curtain Road, Shoreditch. They have a late license, with the best experimental cocktails around so you can spend hours in there. Another awesome speakeasy bar is Happiness Forgets. Their basement in Hoxton Square is the ideal place for a night out.

Shoreditch soundtrack
Any song by Temper Trap. It reminds me of when we first opened the Modern Society store late last year.

Music at Merchants – week starting 9th May

May 9, 2016

The sun came out and everyone lost their mind. Meanwhile, the Spiritland team were off looking at esoteric tonearms and ultrasonic record cleaners in a cavernous exhibition centre in Munich. Sometimes you just have to suffer for your art. This week will largely be spent digesting the new Radiohead album and prepping for the 50th anniversary of Pet Sounds next week. Meanwhile, here’s what will be happening in the bar at Merchants Tavern this week

On Wednesday night, Carl Gosling (Heavenly Jukebox) makes his debut at MT. Heavenly are one of our favourite crews around, and you can expect nothing but good music from Carl, touching on jangly country and summery pop

Thursday night finds LD (Spacebass/NTS) at the controls. You’ll recognise him for his mix of high-sheen funk, cosmic jazz and smoothed out fusion. Expect a few Prince rarities in the mix too

Ben Morris (Kudos) is your selector for Friday night. Running the Kudos distribution empire means access to a ridiculous amount of good music, early releases and rare business. Let the man guide your evening’s entertainment

Harv Nagi did such a spot on job when he played at Merchants Tavern a few weeks ago, we thought we wouldn’t waste any time in getting him back. He’ll be playing deep jazz, rare latin, tasty boogaloo and more on Saturday night

Rob Butler (Be With Records) eases you out of the weekend with a 4 – 8pm session on Sunday afternoon. Nothing but the highest quality music from this experienced collector and jock

Sounds come from Spiritland

P.S. Keep the 27th of May free, we’re having a party

Music at Merchants – week of 15th February

February 16, 2016

Beach Studio-M

It’s properly cold out there. Either gaze upon the vista above or come and warm your ears and your heart by the roaring fire at Merchants Tavern, in the company of a strong drink and tender-hearted DJ. Here’s who’ll be playing this week

Toby Tobias (Delusions of Grandeur) sets things up on Wednesday night. Fresh faced and reasonably relaxed from an inspiration month in Bali, he’ll be playing toe-tappers from his deep collection.

Elle Andrews plays on Thursday night. Expect some truly unfindable rarities in the mix, from off-beat rock to life-affirming dub.

Leo Walton (Amateurism) is at the controls on Friday night. His Amateurism blog is an oasis of exquisite taste on the internet and home to acres of phenomenal music. The music plays from 6.30pm to close.

Saturday night sees another visit from our pals Andrea and Mr Black (Purple Radio) – with absolutely no shame in their game, you can expect soul, disco, pop and some adults only AOR.

Joe Muggs plays a supremely chilled set on Sunday afternoon from 4 – 8pm. If you’ve wanted to hear the system in full quality, Sunday afternoons are the time. Expect folk, dub and downtempo electronic selections.

Sounds come from Spiritland
